Everyone who enters an MRI scan must be safety screened. This involves investigating whether the patient has any medical implants and/or foreign objects on or within their person that could be unsafe. For those with communication difficulties, memory issues or complex medical histories, this can be challenging.

Currently, MRI safety screening is done using a written questionnaire filled in by the patient followed by a verbal review with MRI staff. This research will focus on building an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool to assist radiographers with pre-MRI screening. It will do this by using a patient’s imaging (E.g., X-rays) already in our system and identifying any medical implants within them. The intention of this project is not to replace the current MRI screening methods, but to enhance them to ensure everyone who enters MRI is safe. Patients will continue to have a verbal review with MRI staff before their MRI.

We are interested in hearing your views on using AI to assist radiographers performing this safety-critical task, and whether you think this will make MRI screening more effective and ultimately safer.

We are keen to hear from everyone, but especially people with more complex medical histories or communication/memory issues, as well as their carers/family members, to see whether this could improve your MRI experience.
