Many people affected by cancer experience menopausal symptoms as a result of their treatment. These symptoms can have a significant impact on quality of life, affecting physical health, emotional wellbeing, relationships, work and daily activities. While some patients receive support, access to specialist menopause care is variable, and there is currently no formal menopause service at The Royal Marsden.

To address this, we have established a multidisciplinary working group consisting of healthcare professionals with expertise in cancer and menopause, including consultants, clinical nurse specialists, physiotherapists and other relevant clinicians. The aim of the group is to explore how a dedicated menopause service could be developed to meet the needs of patients treated at The Royal Marsden.

As part of this work, we have already surveyed healthcare professionals across the Trust. The response demonstrated overwhelming support for the development of a formal menopause service, with staff recognising both the unmet needs of patients and the benefits that a coordinated service could provide.

The next stage of the project is to involve patients directly. We would like to understand patients' experiences of menopausal symptoms following cancer treatment, the support they have received, any gaps in care, and what they would value from a future service. Your views will help us understand which patients would benefit most from specialist support, how and when the service should be accessed, and what it should include. This may involve advice on symptom management, lifestyle support, hormone and non-hormonal treatment options where appropriate, psychological support, sexual wellbeing, bone health, and referral to other specialist services.

We are looking to hear from people who have been treated at the Royal Marsden. We are particularly interested in hearing from people who:

  • Went through menopause as a result of their cancer treatment
  • Were advised to stop hormone replacement therapy (HRT) because of their cancer
  • Found that their menopausal symptoms became worse after treatment

We understand that some people may face additional challenges in getting help and support for menopausal symptoms. That's why we want to hear from a wide range of people, whatever your experience has been.
